Project Newsland RV 2013: Our Real-World Test with the Bright Solar 100W Panel
Let’s be honest, staring at your RV’s battery monitor can really kill the vibe of a perfect sunset. That was the constant worry for the owner of the “Newland,” a 2013 Fleetwood Discovery. He came to us with a simple goal: stop worrying about power and start boondocking with confidence. The heart of the solution for Project Newsland RV 2013 was a single Bright Solar 100W flexible solar panel.

We’ve installed a lot of panels, but the Bright Solar 100W flexible solar panel was the right call here. The roof on this Fleetwood is fiberglass, and the owner was (rightfully) terrified of drilling leaks. The flexible design was a no-brainer. It’s surprisingly thin and just molds to the roof’s curve. We went with the VHB tape and adhesive method—no holes, no stress. It’s been on there for over a year now, through everything from desert heat to mountain hailstorms, and it hasn’t budged an inch.
So, what can you actually run? This is where Project Newsland RV 2013 delivered some surprises. We paired the panel with a decent MPPT charge controller and the existing two 100Ah batteries. On a good day, we see a solid trickle of power that easily handles the 12V basics: the water pump, fantastic fan, and all the LED lights are a given. But the real win was the fridge. The owner runs a 12V compressor model, and he told us last month, “It’s the freedom that’s amazing. I camped for four days in the Kaibab National Forest and never once worried about the battery. The panel just kept up.”
It’s not all perfect, of course. You won’t be powering an air conditioner with this single Bright Solar 100W flexible solar panel. On heavily overcast days, you need to be mindful of your usage. But for what it is—a simple, single-panel system—the performance has been stellar.
Looking back at Project Newsland RV 2013, it’s a perfect example of how a targeted upgrade can massively improve the RV experience. You don’t always need a giant, expensive system. Sometimes, all you need is one reliable Bright Solar 100W flexible solar panel to buy you that extra freedom.
